What’s your family story – a genealogy contest for SK families
I am announcing my new summer genealogy project – a free (yes, free) family tree and a feature in a major Saskatchewan magazine.
What is it?
I will research your family tree and write it up in a magazine for publication this winter. You get the tree, all the documents I can find, and your story in a magazine. You’ll discover relatives you didn’t know you had.
Who can apply?
You and your family must be from Saskatchewan. Preference will be given to families whose great-grandparents immigrated to Saskatchewan and have an intriguing story. (That’s about the turn of the 19th century, or roughly 1880-1920.) Did your great-uncle fight in WWI or WWII? Were your family homesteaders? You don’t need to know any details, but do please include the family tale with your entry.
When is the deadline for applying?
Saturday, July 21, 2018.
Where do I apply?
Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with your full name and please tell me why you’d like to have your tree done. Also include a brief paragraph about your family story.
When will I know if I’ve won?
I will post the winning name on Thursday, July 28, and if it’s you, I’ll contact you privately beforehand.
Why are you doing this?
I am fascinated by the stories of Saskatchewan and the people who live here, I’m a storyteller and a genealogist, and I like a challenge.
How do you do this?
In a word: research. I take the facts you give me, figure out the places I can look to find facts to build on what you know, find documents, dig some more and so on.
That sounds… hard. How long have you been doing this?
About 20 years, but I really only got serious about it two years ago. This website’s just 15 months old. In January, I became a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
What do I need to know about my family?
I like the detective work, but anything you’ve got, even a guess, is very helpful. Please see my Questionnaire for genealogy here.
I’d love a free tree but not so sure about the magazine article. Can I do the tree but not the article?
Unfortunately, no. In future I might offer a free tree, but this offer is the tree + article combo package.
I’ll tell you if you win.
I’m interested but I have questions you didn’t cover here.
Absolutely! Please send your questions to email@example.com.
The fine print
By emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org, you will not be added to any mailing lists.
If you’d like to stay in touch, I’d like that very much too, so I invite you to sign up with me at the sign in below.
